The Disco Biscuits‘ Jon Gutwillig has issued a formal apology to drummer Allen Aucoin. As previously reported, the Disco Biscuits announced that they were parting ways with Allen Aucoin, their drummer since 2005, on October 26, following a weekend full of rumors as well as a “diss track,” dubbed “I Don’t Talk,” aimed at the musician that Gutwillig released and then quickly pulled from the web.
In his formal apology, Gutwillig explained, “’ll cut right to the chase: I want to apologize to Allen, to the fans, and to my band for releasing ‘I don’t talk.’ It doesn’t matter what led up to my emotional reaction and choice to share this song publicly, all that matters is that it was hurtful to both Allen and everyone else involved. Emotions were running high, rumors were flying and I felt the need to defend the Biscuits and to set the record straight that our decision to part with Allen was personal and creative more than anything else. That information could have been delivered in a much more professional and compassionate way. Our intention was for an amicable split. That didn’t happen for many reasons, many of which were out of our control. I can only stand up and be accountable for the part of that which I was responsible for, and that’s why I’m writing this note to everyone now. I hope that you can accept my apology, and that we can get back to the mission of making the craziest music of all time. Love, Jon.”
The Disco Biscuits kicked off a fall tour on Halloween with drummer Marlon B. Lewis, who has performed with Biscuits co-founder Marc Brownstein in the funk project Star Kitchen, behind the kit. The Colorado-based Aucoin appeared at Denver’ Ophelia’s yesterday as part of the This Is Boring series. In a note before the show he explained, “Tomorrow night I’ll be returning to Ophelia’s for the third installment of This is Boring. Wardo will open the night with a vinyl set, and after ten years, Ben Samples and Mikey Thunder return as Disco Dragons. I’ll be joining them to make it an extra BORING set. Denver’s music scene has a way of bringing the right people together at the right time. I’m excited and honored to share the stage with such incredible local talent.”
In an unexpected turn of events, last night, during his band lespecial’s show at Philadelphia’s Warehouse on Watts, bassist Luke Bemand “covered” Gutwillig’s apology note by reading it out loud over a musical bed. Disco Biscuits will perform at Washington, DC’s 9:30 Club this evening.
