On Tuesday evening, October 7, Greensky Bluegrass arrived at The Historic Bama Theatre in Tuscaloosa, Ala., where they turned in the latest stop on their Fall Tour. During the concert’s first half, the band positioned a cover of the Grateful Dead’s Go to Heaven cut, “Alabama Getaway,” in the second-to-last slot before set break. Its arrival represented a debut, as this group of players had never performed the Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter credited number before.
Before taking on the task of performing a new cover, the band, Paul Hoffman, Dave Bruzza, Anders Beck, Mike Devol, and Michael Arlen Bont, began their show with the live staple, “Old Barns.” They followed up with a tribute to the greats, covering the Stanley Brothers’ “Little Maggie.” Returning to original songs, they delivered a sequence that featured “200 Miles from Montana,” “What You Need,” “Lose My Way,” “Who Is Frederico?” and “Tuesday Letter.”
What followed began as “Broke Mountain Breakdown” before veering into other territory, a picking party built around the Grateful Dead’s “Alabama Getaway,” and the band’s de facto debut. Hoffman led the lyrics, with support from his bandmates, including an instrumental breakdown from Dobroist, Beck. The band’s cover was drenched in acoustics, showcasing the best of their collective instrumental prowess, built on their 25-year history. Rather than come to a complete stop, the group capped the cover by weaving in “Broke Mountain Breakdown Reprise.”
The second half of the night started with a take on “Last Winter in the Copper County” ahead of fan favorite, “A Letter to Seymour,” and seasoned play, “In Control.” The 2019 All for Money title track came before “Born Again,” and a sequence delivered as “Windshield” and Bob Marley’s “Could You Be Loved.” The Bruzza-penned “33443” emerged before a frame ending, “Kerosene,” another contribution from the mustache-clad guitarist.
For their final offering, the band played a rarity: Tyler Childers’ “Universal Sound,” which entered their repertoire in 2019 and has only been performed live a total of 14 times.
