Trey Anastasio and Cassandra Wilson have been added to Cyro Baptista’s 75th birthday celebration at New York’s Jazz Lincoln Center. As previously reported, the uptown jazz institution will honor the percussionist on November 7 and 8 with a program titled Cyro Baptista at 75: Banquet for the Spirits. Anastasio will provide guitar and vocals on November 7 while Wilson will sing on November 8. Hassan Hakmoun will also appear on sintir both nights.
Baptista’s diverse career includes work with Jazz Lincoln Center visionary Wynton Marsalis as well as John Zorn, Paul Simon, Laurie Anderson, Badi Assad, Derek Bailey, Gato Barbieri, Daniel Barenboim, Medeski Martin & Wood, Kathleen Battle, David Byrne, Dr. John, Brian Eno, Melissa Etheridge and his own Beat the Doney ensemble, among others.
Anastasio and Baptista first shared the stage in 2000, when they both joined MMW at Albany, NY’s Palace Theatre during Phish’s first hiatus. The percussionist joined Trey Anastasio Band in 2002 and he has been part of many of the guitarist’s solo ensembles ever since. He also backed Phish when they welcomed Jay-Z to the stage in 2004.
