Last night, Greensky Bluegrass turned in their latest live performance. The band, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary beginning next month in its native Michigan, took the stage at Saranac Brewery in Utica, N.Y., where they welcomed assistance from a regional fixture of the jam scene, moe.’s Al Schnier.

From the jump, the band coalesced on “Born Again,” a feature of 2024’s The Iceland Sessions EP, before stepping back in time on Bill Monroe’s “Wheel Hoss.” The initial batch of songs included originals “Just Listening,” “Solstice,” and “200 Miles From Montana,” before revisiting Jimmie Skinner’s “Doin’ My Time” merged with Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City.” Their potent blend of self-scribed material and borrowed tunes accounted for the makeup during Schnier’s arrival.

The band’s guest took the stage with his electric guitar in tow. During Schnier’s time on stage, he merged his licks with Greensky Bluegrass members on their 2011 Handguns track, “Lose My Way.” Rather than cut the collaboration short, they positioned a cover as the set ender; the final Schnier-assisted number took shape as The Dillards’ “Reuben’s Train,” a long-time fixture of the group’s live repertoire, which entered their archive in 2005.

Following Schnier’s contributions, Greensky Bluegrass took a break before resuming the second half of their Mohawk Valley gig. After setting the precedent during set one, the band continued their task of serving the bluegrass tradition with originals and covers, including a jam sequence that took shape as a ricochet of Wayward Sons’ “Tarpology” into Pink Floyd’s “ One Slip,” and pinballed back to the aforementioned covers before resolving into their own “Past My Prime.”

Ultimately, the band turned in their interpretation of Bob Marley’s “Small Axe” as the night’s encore. After last night’s team-up, Greensky Bluegrass will proceed to a festival slot at FreshGrass in North Adams, Mass., today. Meanwhile, moe. Will remain off the road until their two-night Brooklyn Bowl takeover, October 9-10.
