Bruce Springsteen has shared “Blind Spot,” the second advance single from Tracks II: The Lost Albums. Set for release on June 27 via Sony Music, Tracks II is a massive collection of seven full-length records recorded between 1983 and 2018, but stuck on the shelf for one reason or another. After “Rain In The River” previewed Perfect World–which he described as “the one thing on this that wasn’t initially conceived as an album”–in his album announcement, today’s follow-up is a first taste of Springsteen’s long-rumored “loops record.”
“Blind Spot” came from the Streets of Philadelphia Sessions, an album Springsteen recorded, mixed and prepped for release in 1995 before pivoting to reunite The E Street Band after a seven-year hiatus. The lost album is unlike anything else he’s cut in its fascination with West Coast hip-hop, which moved him to create a library of looping instrumentals with engineer Toby Scott. These tight cycles, performed primarily by the artist with additions from Patti Scialfa, Soozie Tyrell, Lisa Lowell and his 1992-1993 touring band, provide a brooding, funky backdrop for a stormy reflection on doubt and betrayal.
“That was just the theme that I locked in on at that moment,” Springsteen said of the heavy themes. “I don’t really know why. Patti and I, we were having a great time in California. But sometimes if you lock into one song you like, then you follow that thread. I had ‘Blind Spot,’ and I followed that thread through the rest of the record.”
On the project’s path to the public, the artist remarked, “I said, ‘Well, maybe it’s time to just do something with the band, or remind the fans of the band or that part of my work life.’ So that’s where we went. But I always really liked ‘Streets of Philadelphia Sessions’…during the Broadway show, I thought of putting it out [as a standalone release]. I always put them away, but I don’t throw them away.”
Beyond disc two, the wealth of music on Tracks II includes LA Garage Sessions ’83, the coveted missing link between Nebraska and Born in the U.S.A. that has been among the most widely bootlegged projects from Springsteen’s discography in recent years. Other exciting entries include boldly divergent country and heartland sounds with pedal steel on Somewhere North of Nashville, a smoky traditional string-backed noir in Twilight Hours, the Mexican culture-inspired Inyo and Faithless, the soundtrack to a film that was never made.
Springsteen first opened up his archives in 1998 with Tracks, a celebrated four-disc collection of 66 unheard recordings from throughout his career. While he’s followed up on that impulse since with expanded reissues of Darkness on the Edge of Town, The River and more, he’s also kept stirring the pot for a follow-up to the revealing compilation–which he seems to have been just as eager to share as the fans have been to hear it.
“’The Lost Albums’ were full records, some of them even to the point of being mixed and not released,” Springsteen said. “I’ve played this music to myself and often close friends for years now. I’m glad you’ll get a chance to finally hear them. I hope you enjoy them.”
Tracks II: The Lost Albums will be released on all digital platforms and as deluxe 9-LP and 7-CD packages. Pre-order the record here, and listen to “Blind Spot” below. Learn more about Springsteen’s busy year ahead at brucespringsteen.net.
