Today, Goose continue the rollout for their fourth studio album Everything Must Go with “Your Direction,” the project’s third single. With this new preview of their first full-length studio release in three years, set to arrive via No Coincidence Records on April 25, the ever-changing band embraces a rubbery, loping groove to communicate the moment before a big leap and the clashing feelings that keep one lingering on the precipice.
“There’s a fundamental tension in there,” frontman Rick Mitarotonda shared in a statement. “Between taking risks and going for something, and all the voices and forces that hold you back from doing it.”
While the affecting, universal lyrics of “Your Direction” fall in line with the preceding singles, which have showcased some of the group’s strongest songwriting yet, the sound shows another dimension of Everything Must Go; the lush and leisurely instrumentation is a left turn from the cinematic odyssey of “Give It Time” and moody, introspective rocker “Lead Up.” Like many of the songs on the breakthrough project, it was fine-tuned for many years before finally arriving in this polished form.
“Like so many tracks on the album, it marks an arrival of sorts,” Mitarotonda detailed. “Something that was on a shelf for some time before finding its moment. Ultimately, it’s fun, but I love when you can operate in multiple registers. Take something light and fun and have a bit of life and weight that gets layered in, too.”
All three advance offerings share the same heft contributed by drummer Cotter Ellis as his first studio recordings with the band. Everything Must Go, which follows 2022’s celebrated Dripfield, is produced yet again by longtime collaborator D. James Goodwin and centers the group’s storytelling strengths with tracks that feature exciting array of colorful characters—several of which are already live favorites. Today’s track lands only days after another lineup change for the group, as percussionist Jeff Arevalo was permanently removed from the lineup on Sunday.
“These songs all come from different times and places in a way that captures a part of the journey of the band,” Mitarotonda details. “It moves through time for us, but not in a tidy, linear way. Like the band, it’s okay for things to feel more like a landscape sometimes and less like a singular cohesive statement. It mixes different moods and ideas and characters. The through line is that each piece is part of that journey and that everyone is welcome to the party.”
