David Lowery has officially announced Fathers, Sons and Brothers, the storied frontman for Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven’s first full-fledged solo offering in 14 years. Set to arrive on May 30 via Cooking Vinyl, the sprawling 28-track project compiles the songs of recent limited-releases The Shadow of the Bull, Leaving Key Member Clause, and Vending Machine with new additions to create an ambitious sonic autobiography. After four decades of indie adoration for his sharp, off-kilter wit and the enticing narratives and characters it charged, Lowery has finally turned his attention inward for a thorough, insightful and affecting record of his life and career.
“Over the years, many have encouraged me to write an autobiography,” Lowery shared in a release. “However, it never really appealed to me. Partly because it seemed like I would have to learn an entirely new skill set, but mostly because there is a standard arc to all successful “rock” autobiographies: a tough childhood, a deep passion for music, many obstacles to overcome, relentless striving, and finally, against all odds, success. And that’s not my story.
“So, in lieu of an uninteresting written autobiography I’ve made this record,” the artist’s statement continues. “I do this not so much to tell my own story but to pay tribute to my mother, father, sisters, extended family, friends, and those who have shared their lives with me. I wanted to sing the songs of the unsung, celebrate friends and family, make amends, and apologize where necessary. It took me nearly 5 years to make this recording and I’m a little sad the process is over.”
The stories that comprise Fathers, Sons and Brothers move chronologically through the singer-songwriter’s life, from his earliest memories of youth in England, through the Disney jails and mushroom-fueled brawls of his adolescence in California, to stark accountability for personal faults and failed relationships of his adulthood. Of course, the story covers his music career, illuminating the peaks and pitfalls of his rise, reign and fade from the spotlight with Camper Van Beethoven and later Cracker. The lead single, “I Wrote A Song Called Take The Skinheads Bowling,” will arrive on Feb. 26.
Fathers, Sons and Brothers will be released digitally, as well as on 3-LP vinyl and 2-CD formats. For more information on Lowery and the album, visit davidlowerymusic.com/home
