Iggy Pop cannot be stopped. At 77 years old, the father of all punks is still forging ahead and subverting expectations at every turn, just as he honors the discography that undeniably altered the shape of music. Today, Iggy pushes that agenda forward yet again with the unveiling of Live at Montreux Jazz Festival 2023, a document of his latest staging at the iconic festival set to release on Jan. 24, 2025 via earMUSIC. To preview the new collection, the punk legend has released his live treatment of “Five Foot One,” speaking to the eclectic mix of songs featured in his set.
Issued in Montreux, Switzerland’s Stravinski Auditorium with backing from an unrelenting seven-piece combo, Iggy’s new treatment of “Five Foot One” takes the 1979 New Values standout to new heights. Bolstered by a barrage of horns and chainsaw guitars, the notoriously chaotic frontman reanimates his deep cut from the post-Bowie years with an explosive vocal performance tinted with a grit well-earned in five decades of screaming his head off. This is only the first of 17 cuts featured on the project (18 on Blu-ray and digital video formats), and it speaks to both the depth of Pop’s canon beyond the unforgettable hits and the performer’s uncanny ability to start a riot from any stage.
On his forthcoming release drawn from his third performance at Montreux to date, The Stooges’ frontman shared “I give something extra every time I do Montreux Jazz. In ’23 it was deep cuts like ‘Mass Production,’ ‘Endless Sea,’ ‘Five Foot One’ and a hell of a lot of sweat.”
Live at Montreux Jazz Festival 2023 will be released as a Blu-ray and CD combo–featuring footage of the complete show and a bonus opening performance of “Rune”–and a double LP gatefold vinyl record, as well as a digital mix on all streaming services. Pre-order and pre-save the project here.
