A new trailer for the upcoming documentary on iconic guitarist and performer Carlos Santana was released today ahead of its world three-day cinema premiere slated for next month. CARLOS: The Santana Journey, directed by two-time Emmy winner Rudy Valdez and produced by Sony Music Entertainment and Imagine Entertainment, hits theaters on Sept. 23, 24 and 27.

The documentary takes viewers through the making of Santana’s legendary music career, mapping out his childhood and teen years as a street performer to his rise to fame as one of the greatest guitar players of all time. The film features interviews, behind-the-scenes footage with the 10-Grammy award winner, family appearances and commentary, and rare archival footage and home videos.

“Do you believe in magic?” Santana asks at the beginning of the documentary’s goosebump-raising trailer. He expresses his amazement when he recalls promoter Bill Graham telling the young Santana is set to open for The Who, Steve Miller, and Howlin’ Wolf at San Francisco’s acclaimed Fillmore in 1967.

“Magic is when you command the elements to capture people’s hearts,” the guitarist says, looping back to his initial question about magic. The first preview reveals an interview with a family member, who remembers Santana’s childhood declaration that he would play on the Ed Sullivan Show – which he soon accomplished in 1969 at 22 years old.
