Last night (Aug. 2, 2023), Phish returned to Madison Square Garden for the fifth night of their residency – the second of the week so far. The iconic venue was ablaze with energy as the band unleashed a spellbinding setlist, packed with fresh spins on classic tunes and surprising transitions, including slowed-down numbers and a “Frankenstein” encore that saw Page McConnell on keytar.

Phish wasted no time igniting the crowd with a rendition of “Possum,” giving both McConnell and Trey Anastasio to melodically get the show on the road. From there, night’s exploration continued with an enchanting “Guyute,” followed by an explosive “Axilla (Part II)” that flowed into a rarity, “Energy,” which took on a new life with plenty of space for creativity and expansion. This led to the fan-favorite “Meatstick,” which saw the excellent interplay between band members that was also apparent in the following song, “It’s Ice.” The temperature was balanced with “Blaze On,” which served as the frame’s closing song.

The second set started with a slow and funky version of “Cavern,” setting the tone for the night’s unique and unexpected pairings. A seamless transition led into a dark and exploratory “Carini,” which gradually shifted into a major key, sending waves of excitement through the crowd before returning to the opening song. “Piper” followed, lush with Anastasio’s and Mike Gordon’s soaring guitar work and infectious energy. The harmony was juxtaposed with “The Well,” making its third appearance during the run. The cornerstone song was followed by “The Howling,” which featured Anastasio quoting from “The Well,” creating a harmonious foundation between the songs and heightening the excitement. The set continued to dazzle with “Taste” and “About to Run,” each delivering the band’s signature improvisational flair. Phish then punctuated the frame with “Chalk Dust Torture.”

The encore commenced with “Frankenstein,” and before long, McConnell stepped out from behind his keys to stand in the spotlight with his keytar prowess on full display. The song, absent from Phish’s live performances for 120 shows, marked a moment of pure joy for both the band and fans. As if that wasn’t enough, Phish continued the encore with “Slave to the Traffic Light,” with the lyrics changed to pay homage to New York.
