Last night, hot off the heels of their collaboration with Béla Fleck on Saturday, Dave Matthews Band performed with another special guest–this time, the acclaimed guitarist and Gov’t Mule frontman Warren Haynes. The collaboration, which took place at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, N.J., marked the first time the guitarist sat in with the ensemble led by Dave Matthews since 2019.
The musical relationship between Dave Matthews Band Haynes traces back to 1993 when Haynes initially joined the band for a groundbreaking performance at the New York rock club Wetlands Preserve. This collaboration followed Haynes hosting Dave Matthews at the Ritz Power Jam earlier that year. Over the years, the duo has shared the stage more than 50 times, with their most recent collaboration taking place at The Gorge in Washington.
Haynes took the stage towards the end of Dave Matthews Band’s set, which showcased a mix of beloved classics, tracks from their 2023 LP Walk Around The Moon and captivating covers, including Led Zeppelin’s “Fool In The Rain” and the Commodores’ “Brick House.”
Haynes burst into the sonic flow with a mesmerizing guitar solo on “Monsters,” a track from the aforementioned Walk Around The Moon. He continued to grace the stage for the fan-favorite “Tripping Billies” from 1991 and a captivating rendition of “All Along The Watchtower,” two songs he has previously performed with the ensemble.
Following an encore break, Dave Matthews returned to the stage for a two-song curtain call that featured an unreleased track, “Sister,” performed with the accompaniment of Carter Beauford on drums, Rashawn Ross on trumpet, and Tim Reynolds on guitar. The band concluded the night with a powerful performance of “Crush,” featuring the full ensemble.
