On Aug. 18, Joe Westerlund, Justin Vernon, Brad Cook and Phill Cook, known as the short-lived group DeYarmond Edison, will mark their times together by turning out Epoch via Jagjaguwar. The set boasts five albums, four CDs, and a 114-page story outlining their joint experience, pre-Bon Iver and Megafaun. Today the group shared the second preview of the forthcoming collection, with the song “hazelton,” which eventually became the For Emma, Forever Ago classic, “Holocene.”
The single represents one of the oldest songs from Bon Iver’s expansive repertoire. The initial song, “hazelton” eventually matured into the recognizable indie-folk anthem, “Holocene,” which was first recorded by Vernon between July 2005 and May 2006 and originally released on a batch of 100 handmade, hand-numbered CD-Rs–hazeltons now make up one of Epoch‘s five LPs.
“This is the sound of sorting through an overabundance of new info, mostly for yourself. And, even in the rather fraught process, finding out just where it is you’ve been headed your whole life,” offered Grayson Haver Currin, the box set’s executive producer and biographer. The track finds Vernon evoking his newly excavated falsetto, which cascades over summiting lyrics which touch on hurt, self-definition and salvation.
Apart from today’s single release and the previous drop, “liner,” and the rest of hazeltons features an unorthodox assemblage of ideas that would eventually bloom into Vernon’s Bon Iver staple For Emma, Forever Ago and beyond. Also included is “hannah, my ophelia,” a collaboration with folks from Collections of Colonies of Bees, and a live version of “hazelton” recorded in Paris with Aaron and Bryce Dessner of the National.
