Today, AJ Masthay and Bottleneck Gallery will unleash the celebrated Grateful Dead visual artist’s latest series Sugaree. The series, which features a portrait of Jerry Garcia, marks the first officially licensed art through the Jerry Garcia Estate and captures Garcia at the height of his career in 1982.

The signed and numbered portrait will come in three forms: the Timed Edition with archival pigment on cotton rag paper, the Letterpress Edition, which is letterpressed on somerset satin, and a Graphite Edition also on cotton rag paper. Each print will be 12 x 16 inches. The Graphite Edition will be signed, embossed with the Jerry handprint and numbered edition of 250; the Lettperress Edition will be signed, embossed with the Jerry handprint and numbered edition of 500, while the Timed Edition will be determined by the number of prints and hand signed by Masthay.

“I am honored and humbled to present the next installment of my Jerry Garcia portrait series titled Sugaree,” Masthsay shared in a press release. “Continuing in the tradition of both Palm Sunday and Stella Blue, my motivation for Sugaree was to not only capture a likeness, but to capture the emotion and essence of what it was to see Jerry play live. The year is 1982, arena rock is at its height of popularity and Jerry is in what I feel is his most ‘classic’ look. Nothing says Jerry more to me than that beard, the hair and that black t-shirt – and of course his most played and perhaps most iconic guitar – Tiger. I don’t know that Sugaree was Jerry’s favorite tune but in all my research for this project, combing through hours of video footage and various photos, it always seemed like Jerry had a sly Mona Lisa smile on his face and a little extra bounce in his step when Sugaree came around. I hope you find I did him, and the era, justice. I’d like to personally thank the Garcia Family for the opportunity to create this piece and a huge thank you to everyone at Bottleneck Gallery for making this happen.”
