Last night, Daniel Donato brought his Christmas Jam, which was postponed due to winter storms, to the Brooklyn Bowl in Nashville. The psychedelic country cowboy separated the performance into two sets: the first dedicated to his Cosmic Country pursuits and a second to the same end but also highlighted by an array of sit-ins from guests including Brent Mason, JD Simo, King Corduroy, Willow Osborne, Matt Rennick, Grace Bowers, Lach Thornton, not to mention Widespread Panic’s own Duane Trucks.

Donato launched the Cosmic Country set off with his adaptation of Mickey Newbury’s “Why You Been Gone So Long?” a song that has been performed eloquently by the likes of Tony Rice and Jessi Colter, making it all his own. He continued with Westerns and originals in his Cosmic Country style, including “Faded Lovin’,” “Ghost Riders In The Sky,” “Rose In A Garden,” “Locomotive No. 9,” and more equipped with adept playing and distinct vocals.

The second set kicked off with three songs featuring Mason: “Gator Bite,” “Alabama Jubilee,” and “My Window Faces The South.” Next, JD Simo joined for three songs, as well, before King Corduroy joined him and Donato on stage for “Hurts Me Too.” The guests continued to roll out, with Osborne adding her picking and vocals on “Mule Skinner Blues,” after which Rennick added his stylings to the mix on “Orange Blossom Special.”

The evening came to its culmination during the 10th track in the second set as Trucks stepped on stage, confirming many fans’ hopes and rumors online that a member of Widespread Panic would join for the show (as they’re in the Music City for their New Year’s Eve shows this weekend.) Trucks added his masterful percussion on the iconic song “She Caught The Katy” before Bowers and Thornton took to the stage to join him in a powerful and honorable rendition of the Allman Brothers Band’s “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” to close the night.
