Yo La Tengo’s Hanukkah run at New York’s Bowery Ballroom continued last night. Rising indie outfit Horsegirl opened while longtime Yo La Tengo friend Eugene Mirman was the night’s surprise comedian.
The trio kicked off their set with a run from “You Are Here” into “Green Arrow.” Then, after “Shades of Blue,” the single “Mr. Tough” and an acoustic “Big Day Coming,” The Sadies guitarist/singer Travis Good joined for “As the Hour Grows Late,” “The Race Is On Again,” “The River of Water,” “One PM Again,” Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil’s “Kicks” and “Clumsy Grandmother Serves Delicious Dessert By Mistake.”
Good returned at the end of Yo La Tengo’s set for a take on The Hondells’ “Little Honda” and contributed to an encore that consisted of a number of tunes by notable Jewish songwriters: Carole King/Gerry Goffin’s “Wasn’t Born To Follow,” Bob Dylan’s “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues” and Jonathan Richman’s “She Cracked.” At the end of the night, Good led the evening’s headliner through The Sadies own “A Good Flying Day.”
The Sadies Dallas Good died unexpectedly of a heart condition in February. YLT’s run continues this evening.
