Oct. 27, Gov’t Mule brought their fall tour to the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio, Texas, in continuation of their trek through the Southern region of the United States. During last night’s performance in The Lone Star State, the Warren Haynes-led unit welcomed the New Orleans-based brass collective The Soul Rebels and contributor to 2021’s Heavy Load Blues and harmonica virtuoso Hook Herrera.
Thursday night’s concert got underway with a jammed-out rendition of “Broke Down on the Brazos,” before the group worked into “Tributary Jam,” which was capped with the third number of the night, “Slackjaw Jezebel,” a song that initially appeared on the group’s 2004 LP, Déjà Voodoo. Then, the musicians moved into the title track from their 2017 album, Revolution Come…Revolution Go, before following up with another tune off the same LP, with “Traveling Tune.”
Next, Gov’t Mule dove into their original number, “Forsaken Savior,” before covering The Beatles’ “She Said She Said,” which was performed with a “Tomorrow Never Knows” jam. Then, the night’s first guests, The Soul Rebels, arrived on stage and joined on the following two songs: “Hole in My Soul” and a rendition of The Who’s “Eminence Front.” Finally, to cap the collaborative numbers, Gov’t Mule moved into a heavy period of jamming before re-emerging for a take on Sonny Boy Williamson’s “Good Morning Little School Girl” with Herrera, who also stuck around for the next jam, consisting of “Snatch It Back and Hold It” into “Hold It Back” and ultimately a return to “Snatch It Back and Hold It.”
Then, Herrera left the stage, leaving Gov’t Mule to perform “Banks of the Deep End” and a frame ending “Thorazine Shuffle.” For their encore, Herrera returned to the stage once again and added instrumentation to a cover of Muddy Waters’ “Long Distance Call,” followed by a rendition of Tom Waits’ “Get Behind the Mule.” After last night’s concert, Gov’t Mule will return to the stage tonight at 713 Music Hall in Houston. Tickets remain on sale for tonight’s show and can be purchased here.
