Last night, Phish returned to the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Mass., for the second show of their summer tour. The band performed a facemelting “Maze,” as well as a monster, jam-filled second set and a three-song encore.
The evening kicked off with an energetic performance of “46 Days.” After the high-octane number got the crowd roaring, Phish calmed the audience down with a tranquil “Water in the Sky.” After the slower number ended, they kicked right back into gear with a 16-minute “Everything’s Right” which mutated into “Rift.” The band kept the energy going with a spacey “Wolfman’s Brother.” Phish showed no signs of stopping when they launched right into “Maze,” highlighted by both keyboardist Page McConnell’s bouncing keyboard lines and guitarist Trey Anastasio’s shreddy, melodic leads. Before the crowd could get a chance to rest, “Maze” transformed into a funky 12-minute jam of “Bathtub Gin,” which segued into The Velvet Underground’s “Rock & Roll” to close out the first set.
For the second set, Anastasio lead the band into a huge “Mikes Song” that went into “I Am Hydrogen” and “Carini,” which saw them go everywhere from heavy to funky to melodic and more. Without missing a beat, Phish melted “Carini” into “Blaze On,” much to the audience’s delight. The improvisation kept flowing as the band brought “Blaze On” into a complete dance party with “Golden Age.” Then, they took “Golden Age” for a 14-minute walk before keeping the groove going with “The Howling,” which the band debuted last October for their Sci-Fi Soldiers costume set last October. Phish transformed “The Howling” into “A Wave of Hope” before closing out the set with a euphoric “Harry Hood.”
Phish returned to the stage for an encore of “Bouncing Around The Room” and a high-energy “NICU.” Without stopping, they brought “NICU” into “Slave to the Traffic Light,” a fitting closer to their run at the Xfinity Center, a venue with notorious traffic.
Phish will return to the stage tonight, July 16, at Maine Savings Amphitheater in Bangor, Maine. Tickets to their upcoming shows are available to be purchased here.
