Last night, John Mayer performed at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Singer/songwriter Maren Morris joined the guitar prodigy for two tunes. The evening also saw Mayer bust out a set of songs that had not been performed live in over eight years, making for an exceptional Nashville gig.
The show kicked off with Morris joining Mayer on a new tune off Sob Rock, “Last Train Home.” Then, Mayer and his full band continued with a song from Continuum, followed by “Shot in the Dark” and fan-favorite “Who Says.” The first set concluded with “Helpless,” “Waitin’ on the Day” and “I Guess I Just Feel Like.”
Next up, Mayer performed an acoustic set that began with a bust-out cover of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home,” last played on Sept. 19, 2014, at Music Midtown in Atlanta, Ga., and continued with “Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967.” Then, he busted out “Hotel Bathroom Song,” last performed on March 1, 2010, at Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wis., before breaking into the first-ever live acoustic performance of “Shouldn’t Matter but It Does,” featuring a “Forever Young” snippet. For the final song of the acoustic set, Mayer covered Tom Petty’s seminal track “Free Fallin’.”
After a brief break, Mayer returned to the stage with his full band to perform an electric “Moving On and Getting Over.” They played “Your Body Is a Wonderland” next and “Stop This Train,” which included a snippet of “Homeward Bound,” before continuing with “Edge of Desire” and a cover of Prince’s “The Beautiful Ones.”
Morris took the stage once more to lend assistance on “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room.” Next, the band took on “Wild Blue” off Sob Rock, followed by set-ender “Gravity.” For their encore, Mayer performed “Dear Marie” from the 2013 LP, Paradise Valley, and 2021’s “New Light.”
Mayer has five stops remaining on his Sob Rock Tour. Next up, he’ll perform a two-night stand at Moody Center in Austin, Texas. After that, he’ll perform two more Texas gigs before descending to Chicago for an April 28 tour closer at United Center. Tickets are still available and can be purchased here.
