Bonhams, a privately owned international auction house and one of the world’s oldest and largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques, has announced that the handwritten lyrics for “Thunder Road,” “For You” and the Marine Band “F” Harmonica that Bruce Springsteen used to record “Thunder Road” will be going on auction. The auction for the items will commence on Oct. 28.

The lyrics for “Thunder Road” are neatly written in pen on four pages of ruled notebook paper. The fourth page has two different outlines for the opening verse. Additionally, thanks to the clear penmanship, it is official that Mary’s dress “waves,” setting in stone the truth on the debate whether the lyric was “sways” or “waves.” The four pages are estimated to go for somewhere between $50,000 and $70,000. The Harmonica is expected to go for anywhere between $5,000 to $7,000.

The “For You” lyrics are written on the same type of paper in pen. They match up almost word for word with the final studio recording on Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. The only discrepancies are the absence of the line, “but you did not need my urgency,” and the line “don’t give me my money, honey” is written as “don’t give me your money, honey.” The pages have an estimated value of $25,000 to $30,000.

All of the items were once owned by Michael Batlan, who worked as a musical instrument technician for Springsteen from ’73 to ’85.
