Last night, Patti Smith released a surprise EP titled Live at Electric Lady, in partnership with Spotify and the famed New York recording studio Electric Lady. The streaming giant and iconic studio aim to continue to invite artists to play their own compositions and cover the songs of artists connected to the studio’s history during the sessions.

Smith’s new record includes live performances of her own songs like “Ghost Dance,” “Broken Flag” and “Birdland” which was recorded in a single take, as well as covers of Stevie Wonder’s “Blame it on the Sun and Bob Dylan’s “One Too Many Mornings.”

“We are very proud to be part of Spotify’s Live at Electric Lady series, our favorite recording studio. It was a unique challenge and offered us an exciting and innovative platform,” said Smith in a press release. “We are grateful to Spotify for their generous support and willingness to present a live performance with all its possibilities of risk and revelation.” 

The first Live at Electric Lady EP release from Jon Batiste came out at the end of July, and Patti Smith’s seven-track EP marks the second so far.

The EP also marks her first piece of recorded music since 2012’s Banga. 

Electric Lady Studios announced a set lineup for artists slated to record at the famed studio including, Japanese Breakfast, Dominic Fike, Faye Webster, Bleachers, and more.
