Pigeons Playing Ping Pong closed their two-night run at Burlington, Vt.’s Higher Ground on Friday night with special guest Rob Compa of Dopapod adding his guitar to a heavy, set-two jam.

Before PPPP even hit the stage, Compa warmed up with opening trio Cycles for a take on Cream’s “White Room,” flexing the chops he’s honed with his usual outfit Dopapod, who are set to return from a year-plus hiatus on April 27 at the Capitol Theatre.

Later, PPPP opened their first set with “Landing”> “Burning Up My Time,” and continued on with favorites like “Melting Lights” and “Offshoot,” as well as a comprehensive “Time to Ride”> “Kiwi”> “Time to Ride” jam. They ended the first half with a nice “Couldn’t We All” and, after a brief setbreak, returned to the stage with “Fade Fast.”

From there, the band offered “Avalance” and then sank into a deep “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”> “Lightning” jam with Compa sitting in for most of the latter. The chemistry between Compa and the Pigeons quartet was naturally there, as the two bands (PPPP and Dopapod) have history touring and jamming together.

After Compa’s departure, PPPP continued getting heady with the instrumental “Havana” and closed out the show with fun-filled versions of “Julia” and a final “Ocean Flows.”
