Bob Weir, Trey Anastasio, Bela Fleck and Michael Franti are among the musicians featured in the upcoming HeadCount documentary A Call to Action. The film chronicles HeadCounts efforts to bring political action back into the live music community and features reflections by musicians ranging from Medeski, Martin and Wood to O.A.R to Galactic to the North Mississippi All-Stars. Most of the film was shot on location in the political hotbed of Broward County, FL at the Langerado Music Festival last March. Artists were asked to reflect on HeadCount and the role music can play in shaping American politics. In addition to the abovementioned musicians, HeadCount co-chair Marc Brownstein and HeadCount board member Al Schnier also sat for interviews.
The thing about HeadCount that always humbles me is the support we get from other artists and the whole music industry, said Brownstein. This documentary is another example of that. Pretty much everyone playing at Langerado sat down in front of the camera and spoke from the heart.
Since its inception in 2004, HeadCount has registered over 60,000 voters. A Call to Action was produced by Concerts4Charity, a fellow nonprofit devoted to promoting philanthropy through music and the arts. A five-minute preview of the documentary can be seen on www.headcount.org.
