In 1971, Jerry Garcia gave the Grateful Deads new keyboardist, Keith Godchaux, a box of tapes and a simple instruction: ‘Learn our music.’ After putting the tapes aside, Godchaux left Garcias box of goodies on his parents houseboat, where they stayed for 35 years. While cleaning out the boat recently, Godchauxs brother Brian and son Zio uncovered the missing tapes, filling a missing gap in the Deads archives. Now, the Dead will release portions of the Houseboat Tapes, all from the groups 1971 tours, as Dicks Picks 35. The four-CD set will include the Deads complete 8/7/71 San Diego show and portions of the bands 8/24 Chicago and 8/6 Hollywood Bowl performances.
