On September 18, Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart will attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records’ statistic for largest-ever drum circle. Dubbed Drums for Peace, the exhibition is expected to unite 3,500 drummers, playing donated percussion instruments during the Earthdance Festival.
Earthdance will take place at the Black Oak Ranch in Laytonville, CA, also featuring performances by Ozomatli, Spearhead, Steve Kimock, and Transcendental Hayride. The current statistic for the largest drum circle is 3,140.
Hart will be joined by fellow Rhythm Devil Bill Kreutzmann, as well as members of his Planet Drum Collective. Airto Moreira, Zakir Hussain, Santanas Karl Perazso are among the drummers expected to join Drums for Peace.
