What will you remember most about 2011?

Seeing my sisters again after eight years and finally inheriting my dad’s old banjo, which my uncle built.

What albums appear most in your iTunes or iPod?

Black Sabbath’s Master of Reality and Townes Van Zant’s Rearview Mirror.

What was the best musical discovery you made in 2011?

Delaney and Bonnie’s record from 1969 Accept No Substitute.

What was your favorite show or tour of 2011?

I really loved playing Wicker Park festival in Chicago, and the Dawes tour has been a really good time.

What musicians should readers look out for in 2012?

We’ve been touring with two amazing groups, Smoke Fairies and Belle Brigade, great live shows and top-notch recordings.

Are there any musicians you would like to collaborate with in 2012?

I’m not much of a collaborator, there are definitely folks in Portland though that I want to get on some of my recordings. Lots of good musicians in town.

How do you plan to ring in the New Year?

Get a new tattoo.

Do you have any New Year’s resolutions?

To fall in love, and to get my uncle’s old pistol in working order again.

What is your favorite memory from 2011?

Playing on the steps of City Hall, Downtown Los Angeles, just a couple guitars and a bunch of hollering and an excruciating heap of smiling.

What artists appear most in your iTunes or iPod in 2011?

I’ve been playing Vinyl almost entirely just because… My favorite dude-who-recorded-music right now is far and away Jaques Brel. “Le Moribond” and of course “Amsterdam” are two performances everyone should YouTube before they leave earth.

What was the best festival you played in 2011?

A smallish festival in Groningen [Netherlands] turned out to be a high – I ended up singing the last song of the night from a raft in the small lake directly in front of the stage.

What was your favorite show of 2011?

Perhaps the show we recently played in Dublin. Rollickingly Irishly deliciously warm friendly fun.

Cillie Barnes, SOKO, Christian Letts, Aaron Embry

Of course!
