In case you still haven’t seen it, this is the video that started it all…

Speaking of performing live, what is the status of Amfibian?

We’re taking it slow…in terms of walking toward the stage. I’m not missing it too much — although there are days… I love working in the studio and writing and recording. One thing I really do miss is our acoustic trio — Anthony, myself and John Korba. I feel that we’ll probably get together within the next few months and start playing again, in this capacity.

If you won’t be gigging out any time soon do you have any studio projects in the works?

Well — that is always the impetus for playing live: “We have all this new music, what do you want to do about it?” Anthony and I are working on a new album. The new stuff sounds great. I think we will want to play a little show and tell when it’s done.

How about Phish songs? It appears that many of the latest Trey tunes were written with other collaborators, are there additional Anastasio-Marshall songs in the works?

In the works? Not really — there are one or two from a previous songwriting session that Phish has not played live yet — so I’m interested to hear those. Trey and I are trying to schedule our next songwriting date also, but right now he and I are working on separate fronts.

From a musical standpoint how would you characterize the current era of Phish?

I think 3.0 is melting faces! I really do feel that this version of the band has the potential to go far, but definitely got off to an unusual start in early 2009. But now…the last tour was just great, I love the Berkeley, CA shows I saw. Looking forward to Halloween antics in my home state, and then a 3-night stand at MSG, with the first-ever show on 1/1. They’re still surprising us and having fun. Now I’m just waiting for some crazy tour announcements to throw us all off like they always do — like Europe or Japan…that will be the icing on the cake.

Final question: moving back to the McLovins, do you have any plans in the works to work with them again in some capacity in the future?

We all enjoyed working together, and everyone seems to like “Cohesive.” I am pretty sure we are going to try for a repeat in the coming weeks…and then after that hopefully they’ll be able to incorporate some of the techniques they learn from us into their own writing style going forward. That’s my main goal in all of this — that would be a nice reward.
