Phil Lesh and The Terrapin Family Band continued their run with special guest guitarist Eric Krasno at Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, CA, offering a special performance that was dedicated to the life and memory of John Perry Barlow, the poet, activist and longtime Grateful Dead lyricist who passed away earlier this week, as the band peppered in some of Barlow’s co-written tunes throughout the evening.
As Deadheadland reports, the show opened up with a touching rendition of “Attics of My Life,” with Lesh, his son Grahame and Alex Koford teaming up for a harmony-laden run with just Grahame’s guitar accompanying. The elder Lesh then addressed the crowd and spoke on his memory of Barlow, calling him “a charter member of the Grateful Dead family from the get-go,” a “lyricist for some of our best songs, a tireless advocate for intellectual and internet freedom” and “a Futurist of the first magnitude.
“I feel privileged to have known him and to have worked with him,” Lesh continued. “We even tried to write some songs together, but it never quite worked out. As [with] all true friendships, you don’t always agree. That’s part of the glory of a true friendship, that you can trust this person to tell you when you’re bullshit, and that was one of John’s finest things: he never hesitated to call anyone on their bullshit—even Garcia. It’s been said that everyone’s death diminishes us all, and it’s never more true in the case of someone we’ve known for so long and that has meant so much to us. Go with God John.”
Lesh then announced the night’s concert will be dedicated to his late friend before he and the band launched into “Estimated Prophet,” one of the many Dead tunes with lyrics penned by Barlow. The first set also featured staples like “Viola Lee Blues” and “Cumberland Blues,” along with covers of Velvet Underground’s “Sweet Jane” and The Rolling Stones’ “Tumbling Dice” before a set-closing “Throwing Stones,” also co-written by Barlow.
Set two kicked off with Krasno leading the way on “Shakedown Street” and also included a couple more Barlow tunes, “Cassidy” and “Let It Grow.” The set closed with the classic run of “China Cat Sunflower” into “I Know You Rider,” and the encore, originally planned to include “He Was a Friend of Mine,” was cut for time to just feature Lesh’s own “Box of Rain.”
