Joan Osborne is taking another pass at her 1995 album Relish with a roster of jazz artists. On Relish Reimagined Osborne and producer Christian McBride are joined by Marc Ribot, Nate Smith, Caelen Cardello, Renee Rosnes, Jerome Jennings and Donny McCaslin.
Osborne first connected with McBride at the 2024 Newport Jazz Festival, which she attended as a fan. He was the musical director at the time, nearing the end of his deacde-long run. She notes, “I met Christian backstage and found him to be incredibly warm, charismatic and friendly.”
The bass player adds, “If you could have told me in 1995 that I’d one day be working with Joan Osborne, you could have knocked me over with a feather. I’m honored to call Joan not just a musical partner and cohort, but a friend.”
The first song to be released from Relish Reimagined, is a new arrangement of the Bob Dylan composition “Man In the Long Black Coat.” When Osborne initially interpreted the song, it had only been out for six years, via Dylan’s 1989 album Oh Mercy. She indicates, “My first recording of it on the original Relish brought me to Dylan’s attention, and he invited me to record a duet with him in the studio, a career highlight for me. This was one of the first tunes Christian and I worked on arranging in his basement studio, and the swinging feel he brought to it propels the tune forward as the story of the lyric unfolds, like a whole movie in one song.”
Relish Revisited will be released on November 13 via Brother Mister Productions/Mack Avenue Music Group. It is now available for preorder.
Osborne is currently on tour with her “Joan Osborne Sings the Songs of Bob Dylan” project.
