Willie Nelson brought the annual Farm Aid benefit concert to a close on Saturday night, welcoming a slew of event participants to the stage at Virginia Beach, VA’s Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater. Early on in the segment, Farm Aid performer Lily Meola emerged for “Will You Remember Mine” and the country great’s son Lukas Nelson, who also was onsite for a spot with his combo, joined his dad for a duet based around Pearl Jam’s “Breathe,” which they recorded on 2012’s Heroes. Later on, Nelson’s son Micah, who is currently on the road with Neil Young’s Chrome Hearts project, led the elder Nelson’s group through his Particle Kid original “Everything is Bullshit” and Young himself appeared alongside Nelson for a fitting version of his own “Are There Any More Real Cowboys?” Fellow Farm Aid performers Nathaniel Rateliff, Margo Price, Meola, Turnpike Troubadours and other event participants then augmented Nelson and Young as they capped off the night with their traditional sing-along take on “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” as well as “I’ll Fly Away” and “I Saw the Light.”

The festive set closed out an action-packed day that kicked off hours earlier, with Price joining the Wisdom Indian Dancers for “The Lord’s Prayer.” As always, collaboration was a key part of the day. Jesse Welles brought out Mon Rovîa for Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down,” shortly before Heartbreaker Mike Campbell himself took the stage with his Dirty Knots, and Ty Myers invited out Nelson’s longtime harmonica player Mickey Raphael for the Nelson/ Waylon Jennings tune “Write Your Own Songs.” During his spot, Rateliff welcomed fellow event performers I’m with Her for “Standing in the Rain Boys” and “Endless Horizon” while Price closed her performance by enlisting Dave Matthews and Welles for a cover of Blaze Foley’s “Oval Room.”

Matthews also opened up his stage during his regular Farm Aid segment with Tim Reynolds. Partway through their spot, the duo welcomed I’m with Her—Aoife O’Donovan, Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz—for “Papertown,” the new original Matthews recorded for the film of the same name with Watkins and Sierra Ferrell. Fiddler Jake Renick Simpson, who is part of Lukas’ band and has sat in with Dave Matthews Band regularly this year, also joined in on “Crush” and “Ants Marching” at the end of the show. (From there, Simpson linked up with the full Dave Matthews Band lineup at Louisville, KY’s Bourbon & Beyond Festival the next day, sitting in on “Jimi Thing,” “Satellite, “Grey Street,” “Everyday,” “Warehouse” and “Ants Marching.”) Fellow board members John Mellencamp and Young, who played with the Chrome Hearts, then delivered career-spanning sets before Nelson brought the charitable event passed the finish line.
