Talk about collaborations. At the final show of the Summer Sessions Tour last night in Boston, members of all the bands (moe., Galactic, Gov. Mule and String Cheese Incident) sat in with each other. Warren Haynes of Gov. Mule alerted fans early in the night that it was going to be a special show before ‘Mule broke into a scorching cover of Black Sabbath’s War Pigs. Next, Michael Kang of SCI and Gibb Droll joined the Mule for a stirring version of Bob Dylan’s ‘I Shall Be Released’. During SCI’s set, Keller Williams sat in on acoustic guitar and added some very percussive funk textures. Then Haynes came out with Ben Ellman on saxaphone and Theryl de Clouet on lead vocals (both from Galactic) along with guitarist Chuck Garvey from moe. for Stevie Wonder’s ‘Superstition.’ During the final song of moe.‘s set (and of the tour – there was no encore due to a strict curfew) members of all four bands came out for the funk classic, ‘Brickhouse’, during which a stuffed pig was tossed into the air by Bill Nershi of SCI, who was left with out an instument. When Garvey noticed Bill’s predicament, he graciously gave up his guitar and took over with the pig.
On a related note, Summer Sessions’ and groove rock Publicist Jim Walsh made his concert debut at the Waterloo Valley show on 8/28 when he joined Gibb Droll on stage with an acoustic guitar.
