Since its inception in 1984 The Black Crowes have cycled through a number of guitarists who have rounded out the band’s core axis of Chris and Rich Robinson. In 1997, after parting ways with axeman Marc Ford, the Robinsons recruited Audley Freed who remained with The Black Crowes through its 2001 hiatus. Indeed, Freed kept close ties with the Robinsons performing with Chris in New Earth Mud, though Ford returned to the fold following the group’s reunion earlier this year. But, last night, when The Black Crowes rolled through his hometown of Nashville, TN, Freed reunited with his former bandmates for a pair of songs. Freed appeared during the encore segment of The Crowes’ Ryman Auditorium performance on ‘Dreams’ and ‘Oh Well.’ BR549 fiddler/pedal steel guitarist Donnie Herron also joined the group during its set for ‘Sunday Night Buttermilk Waltz’ and the debuts of ‘Brand New Heartache’ and ‘Close Up the Honky Tonks.’ Herron has a longstanding relationship with Rich Robinson having performed on the guitarist’s solo album Paper. The Black Crowes will play a hurricane releif benefit in Memphis, TN tonight with the Drive-by Truckers.
