HeadCount will return to active duty this summer, just in time for November’s Midterm elections. Founded by the Disco Biscuits’ Marc Brownstein and the Pharmer’s Almanac’s Andy Bernstein before the 2004 Presidential election, HeadCount is
a non-profit voter registration organization with ties to such scene staples as Phish, the Dave Matthews Band and the Dead, among others. This summer HeadCount will
launch a ‘Leadership Training’ program, intended to give young activists hands-on experience in event production and community organizing. The program will coincide with HeadCount’s ‘Midterms Matter Tour,’ a nationwide effort to register voters at festivals and major concerts. The Leadership Training program consists of a field internship where trainees will play an active role in staging the Midterms Matter Tour, which will include about 10 concerts and festivals in three regions (Northeast, Midwest and Northern California).Trainees will also work several hours per week on various projects related to HeadCount, and participate in weekly telephone conference calls with guest speakers including the musicians, band managers and promoters who support HeadCount. According to Bernstein, the organization will pay most travel expenses and also assist with job placement in the music or non-profit sectors once the program is complete at the end of the summer.
