Two weeks after Derek Trucks performed In Memory of Elizabeth Reed with Wynton Marsalis at a New York benefit for Jazz at Lincoln Center, the young guitarist scored another chance to play with a member of the Marsalis clan. On Friday, Trucks played with his band at Charlotte, NCs Visulite Theater. At the tail end of the Derek Trucks Bands set, North Carolina-resident Branford Marsalis emerged for Soul Serenade and a set-closing version of Afro Blue. Soon after, Marsalis returned for the groups encore of Joyful Noise. Trucks will kick off the Soul Stew Revival Tour with his wife Susan Tedeschi, brother Duane Trucks and a number of other friends June 7 at Dallas House of Blues.
