The belated results are in and it turns out that Umphreys McGee keyboard player Joel Cummins will be headed to the World Series. No, his tickets are not courtesy of either Chicago baseball club (although at this point a Cubs vs. White Sox match-up does seem possible) but rather from Major League Baseball after Cummins took first place in the batting competition that took place backstage at the Bonnaroo Music Festival. Cummins had been locked in a tie with five other musicians, all of whom took swings in the batting cage and made contact and forward momentum for 14 out of a possible 15 swings. Cummins’ feat was equaled by Steel Train’s Jon Shiffman and Daniel Silbert, Rogue Wave’s Patrick Abernethy and Dominic East as well as Weather Underground’s Ryan Kirkpatrick. For a tie-breaker, the six musicians were asked to select a team that would win the most games in July and Cummins took top honors in selecting the Cubbies. The keyboard player will have time to enjoy some baseball over the coming days as Umphrey’s is off until a Red Rocks date on August 31 with Gov’t Mule.
