My Morning Jacket’s One Big Holiday festival continued last night, climaxing with a headlining set by the event’s hosts that featured numerous sit ins by some of the event’s emerging acts. As previously reported, this year the Jacket moved One Big Holiday to Florida, presenting a three-day event in Miramar Beach from April 3-5.
The Kentucky-bred quintet commenced their extended spot with the second-ever take on “Out in the Open,” from their recently released LP, is. A few songs later, the guest spots kicked in when Devon Gilfillian, who opened for My Morning Jacket on the main stage earlier in the day, emerged for “Only Memories Remain.” Soon after, the collaborations really picked up when guitarist Jake Brownstein and keyboardist Dani Battat, whose band Eggy are playing both beach and silent disco sets at One Big Holiday, sat in on the It Still Moves jam vehicle “Steam Engine.” (Brownstein has been earning his indie-rock cred as of late and recently joined Hamilton Leithauser during his residency at Cafe Carlyle for Warren Zevon’s “Lawyers, Guns and Money” and Traveling Wilbury’s “You Took My Breath Away.)
Immediately after, another event performer, Louisville songwriter Maggie Halfman, emerged for her own “Come On.” From there, the members of the Louisville folk act Bendigo Fletchermade their way to the stage for the Evil Urges ditty “Smokin’ From Shootin'” and then bassist Karina Rykman emerged for an extended sequence. The New York musician, who was on site performing with her trio and has previously opened for MMJ, joined the group for a take on “Run Thru” that included a bit of Pantera “I’m Broken,” before segue into Radiohead’s “The National Anthem” and then the end of “Run Thru.” Finally, for their encore, My Morning Jacket welcomed another one of their direct support acts, singer-songwriter S.G. Goodman, to help on their debut take on Neil Young & Crazy Horse’s “Like a Hurricane.
One Big Holiday will come to a close today.
