Drummer extraordinaire Adam Deitch has shared the latest track from his upcoming album Roll The Tape via his soul-jazz project, The Adam Deitch Quartet. The song, titled, “Play On Playa” is a heartfelt nod to none other than New York’s Soulive.

This latest release like the rest of the LP–set to release on Nov. 10 via Deitch’s own Golden Wolf Records–features Deitch alongside organist Wil Blades and fellow Lettuce members Eric “Benny” Bloom on trumpet and Ryan Zoidis on saxophone.

“Play On Playa” nods to Soulive with infectious melody and groove-driven organ work and wouldn’t be out of place in Soulive’s own repertoire. Deitch, a perpetual student of music, acknowledges the profound influence Soulive has had on his musical journey, saying, “I owe so much to Soulive for introducing me to organ trio music. They’ve really helped mold the careers of both Lettuce and myself into who we are today.”

Roll The Tape boasts 10 fresh tracks in total that break free from the constraints of the traditional organ trio format. Deitch’s penchant for funk, breakbeat, hip-hop, and electronic music is on full display, as he highlights each member’s unique strengths in the quartet.

Deitch summed up the group’s dynamic in a press release by saying, “Wil and I are both basketball fans and homies. He is highly skilled with the organ pedals and left-hand bass and is super smart and easy to work with. Zoidis and Bloom always balance each other out, with Zoidis bringing a psychedelic vibe with his effects and Benny bringing his wild, crazy Benny attitude as a great musician with great showmanship.”
