Last night, Feb. 8, Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros let the good times continue to roll with their second performance set for Port Chester, N.Y.’s Capitol Theatre. Once again, they were joined by their orchestral string and brass section, The Wolfpack, to share some of the most pristine renditions of the Grateful Dead songbook in the modern era.

Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros kicked off their performance with the Weir-penned “Greatest Story Ever Told,” which melded into Sugar Boy and His Cane Cutters’ “Iko Iko” – first performed by the Grateful Dead in May 1977. The ensemble then dipped into Weir’s list of composition credits with a rendition of “Only a River” before two of the Grateful Dead’s most beloved and recognizable songs: “Friend of the Devil” and “Althea.” Keeping in line with hits, they moved into an interpretation of The Beatles’ “Come Together” with Don Was’ droning bass lines beaming as the tail-end of the song flowed into an outro of The Fab Four’s “Eleanor Rigby.” The frame was closed with a jam of “Weather Report Suite” > “Let It Grow.”

After a set break, the band returned to the stage they’ll call home for the week to deliver “Ramble On Rose” as The Capitol Theatre’s technicolored lights adorned the dome ceiling, ornate walls and smiling faces abound. Next came “Truckin’,” a national treasure, which led into the trove of emotion “Looks Like Rain.” Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros hooked on to their flow at that point in the show and didn’t let go as they moved into “Playing in the Band” > “Uncle John’s Band” > Kingfish’s “Supplication” which contained reprises of both “Uncle John’s Band” and “Playing in the Band” bookending their jam while tacking on an epilogue through a cover of Bonnie Dobson’s “Morning Dew.”

With yet another incredible exploration of the history and soul of the Grateful Dead, which tended to the enduring embers of its hearth, Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros returned to the stage for an encore of “Black Muddy River.” The ensemble will take a break tonight and return to The Capitol Theatre on Friday, Feb. 10.
