Last night, Dead & Company performed the first Sunday show of their 2022 summer tour at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Fittingly the band performed the traditional “Samson and Delilah” to kick off their second set in The City of Brotherly Love; the tune has been a staple of Sunday night Grateful Dead shows since it entered the band’s repertoire in the mid-‘70s.
Once again, Dead & Company welcomed Jay Lane on drums, who is currently sitting in for the Grateful Dead’s original drummer, Bill Kreutzmann. Last night’s gig got underway with a segued pairing of the fan-favorite “Truckin’” into a cover of Bob Dylan’s seminal number, “All Along the Watchtower.” Next, the ensemble dug into “Here Comes Sunshine,” which included a “China Cat Sunflower” jam– a hint of what would come during the second set.
Weir’s breakup epic “Looks Like Rain” arrived next before the Mayer-led “Brown-Eyed Women.” Then, for the final tunes of the first set, the band performed a segued pairing of “Estimated Prophet” into “Deal” before stepping off the stage for a set break. Finally, they returned, ready for their second set, at which point they performed the first “Samson and Delilah” of the 2022 summer tour.
The classic pairing of “Help on the Way” into “Slipknot!” came before a full-on launch into the first set teased, “China Cat Sunflower,” which was appropriately paired with the traditional “I Know You Rider.” Mickey Hart led “Drums” and “Space” next. The latter included a “Blues for Allah” tease to cap the cosmic display.
Next, the whole band returned to the stage for a segued ending to the second set, which began with “Cumberland Blues” into “Days Between” and finally, an upbeat “Franklin’s Tower.” For last night’s encore, Dead & Company performed two tunes, “Brokedown Palace” into “Casey Jones,” to cap their time in Philadelphia.
Following last night’s show, the ensemble will take a night off before popping up in Burgettstown, Pa., for a gig at The Pavilion at Star Lake on July 12. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased here.
