Last night, Tedeschi Trucks Band welcomed renowned keyboardist, guitarist, vocalist, song-writer and arranger Mitch Chakour on the organ to close out their run at the Westville Music Bowl in New Haven, Conn. Before the appearance of the legendary music director, the 12-piece ensemble shared tender covers of Derek and The Dominos, Dr. John and more, along with a full exploration of the first installment of their ongoing series I Am The Moon.

Hot on the heels of the second installment of I Am The Moon: II. Ascension, and after opening performances by Tedeschi Trucks Band keyboardist Gabe Dixon’s solo project and Los Lobos, Tedeschi Trucks Band stepped on stage.

The ensemble started with a combination of “Signs, High Times” and “Do I Look Worried.” They continued with covers of Derek & The Dominos’ “Bell Bottom Blues” and “Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad?”. Much like the previous evenings on their Wheels Of Soul Tour, the group led by Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi then pivoted to the five songs from the first installment of the aforementioned project: I Am The Moon: I. Crescent, which was released on June 3.

After spinning the sonic silk of their story into gold, Tedeschi led the group through her song 1998 song “Just Won’t Burn.” Her distinct soulful inclinations carried over to “Part Of Me,” which was followed by Dr. John’s “I Walk On Guilded Splinters” and Billy Taylor’s “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free,” to close the set.

After a short break, the group returned to the stage to share the only song of the evening off of I Am The Moon: II. Ascension, “So Long Savior.” After the taste of Ascension Tedeschi Trucks Band vocalist Alecia Chakour smiled as her father took to the stage to handle the organ on the dynamic, rough and rowdy song Joe Cocker staple “Space Captain,” which was popularised during his time as Cocker’s musical director.
