Last night, Phish delivered their second night of music at Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, Ind. The four-piece kicked off the evening with “Turtle in the Clouds,” followed by the title track off their 2004 album, Undermind, which bled into “Drift While You’re Sleeping.”
The set continued with a take on Shuggie Otis’ 1971 track, “Strawberry Letter 23,” ahead of “Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan,” performed for the first time since Dec. 18, 2019, at North Charleston Coliseum, in Charleston, S.C.
The first “Runaway Jim” of 2022 was played next and clocked in at over nine minutes. A slow and funky take on “Camel Walk” ensued. The tune provided a chance for the band to flex their improvisation skills before they launched into the fan-favorite, “Timber,” – which also showcased their innate instrumental abilities.
Next, Trey Anastasio riffed into “Julius,” adding gospel flair to the ensemble’s Southern affair. Finally, they landed on “Split Open and Melt” as their set-ender.
“You Enjoy Myself” opened the second set and bled into “A Wave of Hope,” played after an idealistic jam. “Wave of Hope” happened to debut at Ruoff Music Center on August 7, 2021, after being released on Anastasio’s solo LP, Lonely Trip, in 2020.
Phish continued their second set of music with “Bug,” segued into “Gotta Jibboo” and followed up with a groovy take on “The Howling.” Then, to finish off the set of the band’s second night at Ruoff Music Center, they performed a tune off Led Zeppelin’s 1969 debut self-titled album, “Good Times Bad Times.”
Perhaps the night’s highlight landed during Phish’s single song encore performance of “Maze.” Whereas the tune is traditionally performed at an increased pace, the band decided to slow things down with a funk-laden reimagining of the song.
Tonight, Phish will finish their Ruoff Music Center stand before packing up and traveling to the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Mass., for two nights of music, beginning on July 14. Tickets are still available for the band’s upcoming gigs and can be purchased here.
