Today, Cass McCombs released a new single further cementing his propensity as a master of vernacular, titled, “Belong To Heaven. The song marks McComb’s first following a chapter of collaborations and side projects.

Since 2019’s Tip of the Sphere, McCombs shared two singles with Steve Gunn, re-released his song “Don’t Vote” as “Don’t (Just) Vote” which features Angel Olsen, Bob Weir and Noam Chomsky, co-wrote songs on Blake Mills’ Mutable Set, and formed a band with Wynonna Judd. He also contributed to a book of poetry titled Toy Fabels, with Tomberlin and helped compile and co-produce the Karen Black collection Dreaming Of You (1971-1976).

For “Belong To Heaven,” McCombs reunited with Grammy Award-winning producer Ariel Rechtshaid who joined him on Catacombs, WIT’S END, and Humor Risk. The track’s melancholy lyrics, beautiful instrumentals and almost manic pace navigate the untimely loss of a friend: “You were totally lunar/ You had a gallows at City Hall and gallows humor/ Wish I had met you sooner/ Now you belong to Heaven.” McCombs handles vocals, guitar, piano and percussion and is joined by Danielle Haim on drums and vocals, Frank LoCastro on keys,  Buddy Ross on Hammond organ, Shahzad Ismaily on bass, keys and piano and The Chapin Sisters on additional vocals.

In the next few weeks, McCombs will play shows throughout California, with stops in Santa Ana, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco and more.
