In solidarity with Neil Young, Joni Mitchell has decided to have her music removed from Spotify. Earlier this week, Young made a stand against the streaming service for promoting The Joe Rogan Experience, which was spreading misinformation about COVID-19. 48-hours later, Young’s music was taken off the platform.

Mitchell wrote on her website, “I’ve decided to remove all my music from Spotify. Irresponsible people are spreading lies that are costing people their lives. I stand in solidarity with Neil Young and the global scientific and medical communities on this issue.”

In response to Young, the platform insisted they knew their responsibility as a giant platform and that they strive to balance both freedom and safety. “We have detailed content policies in place, and we’ve removed over 20,000 podcast episodes related to Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic,” the company wrote. “We regret Neil’s decision to remove his music from Spotify, but hope to welcome him back soon.”

Young responded by writing a new open letter on his site. He wrote, “I support free speech. I have never been in favor of censorship. Private companies have the right to choose what they profit from, just as I can choose not to have music support a platform that disseminates harmful information.”

Mitchell’s music is currently in the process of being removed.
