John Ginty first made a name for himself playing gospel in the original incarnation of Robert Randolphs Family Band. Indeed, it was with the Family Band that the organist first performed with the Blind Boys of Alabama, backing the legendary vocal group on its 2002 album Higher Ground. Ginty has also collaborated with the Blind Boys onstage over the years, including a performance at the 2002 Jammy Awards. On Sunday, Ginty joined the Blind Boys once again at New Yorks Central Park SummerStage, adding organ to a rendition of Higher Grounds People Get Ready. Ginty, who opened the show as part of Citizen Copes band, later returned during band introductions to help the Blind Boys close out its set.
