On the evening of the autumnal equinox, John Kadlecik and friends arrived at Brooklyn Bowl for two lengthy sets of Grateful Dead standards sprinkled with just enough non-Dead material to allow Kadlecik’s own talents to shine through. The John K Band features drummer Jay Lane, a veteran of Rat Dog and founding member of Furthur, along with Benjie Porecki on keyboards and Joe Gallant on bass. Opening with a bouncy cover of Van Morrison’s “Cleaning Windows,” the quartet was joined for much of the night by saxophonist Kenny Brooks to take things in a decidedly jazzy direction. “Ripple,” “Sugaree” and “Terrapin Station” were like comfort food with enough freshness to avoid lapsing into tribute while The Police’s “Walking In Your Footsteps” and original material, particularly “Sister Smiles,” were welcome additions. After winding down the fall tour of the John K Band, Kadlecik is playing a series of solo acoustic shows on the West Coast and in Hawaii throughout October
