The Rolling Stones closed their two-show run at East Rutherford, NJ’s MetLife Stadium last night. During the performance, Mick Jagger mentioned that the group has performed in the New York metropolitan area over 100 times during their 60-plus career, and the show was dotted with surprise setlist choices.
After kicking things off with the tour’s high-energy openers “Start Me Up” and “Get Off of My Cloud,” staples of each stop thus far, the Stones busted into the beloved Sticky Fingers track “Bitch” for the first time since 2022 and only the second time since 2019. Then, the band offered their new song Hackney Diamonds single “Angry,” and announced that “Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker),” a rocker from the 1973 LP Goats Head Soup, won the evening’s fan vote. (The tune was one of several location-specific selections, opening with the line ” The police in New York City/ They chased a boy right through the park/ And in a case of mistaken identity/ They put a bullet through his heart.”)
As a treat, the Stones then moved onto the tender Sticky Fingers ballad “Wild Horses,” which actually won Thursday’s fan vote at MetLife but Jagger says he realized their fans seemed to enjoy. Jagger also toyed with the crowd during the band introductions portion of the set, mentioning that Connecticut, where Keith Richard has lived for many years, claims to have better pizza than New York.
The surprises continued a little deeper into the set during the Richards-fronted mid-show segment of the concert, when the Stones debuted the Hackney Diamonds cut “Tell Me Straight.” Despite ostensibly being a tour in support of Hackney Diamonds, the Stones have only performed three or four cuts from the album a night and have only played seven of the tracks ever live; last night’s live debut marks only the second time they have debuted a Hackney Diamonds song this tour.
Later in the evening, immediately after powerful back-to-back renditions of “Sympathy for the Devil” and “Honky Tonk Women,” the latter of which also prominently nods to New York City, the Stones offered the tour debut of the Let It Bleed standout “Midnight Rambler.” The song, which was last played in 2022, found Jagger showing off his farmonia skills and the band moving into a bit of Robert Johnson’s “Come On in My Kitchen.”
The Stones will perform at Foxborough, MA’s Gillette Stadium on May 30.
