Renowned guitarist Al Di Meola, recently suffered a heart attack during a live performance in the heart of Romania’s capital city, Bucharest. Fortunately, the latest reports from a spokesperson at the hospital indicate that he is now in a stable condition and is actively receiving medical attention.
At 69, Di Meola took to the stage at a venue on Wednesday, commencing his scheduled concert at 9 p.m. However, an unexpected turn of events unfolded during the performance, when fans witnessed Di Meola clutching his chest while performing and noticed that the guitarist struggled to exit the stage. This alarming incident led to a brief continuation of the performance by the remaining two members of Di Meola’s trio, only to be followed by the announcement that the show would have to be cut short.
A statement released by the Bagdasar-Arseni emergency hospital disclosed that Al Di Meola was swiftly admitted to a cardiology ward, where he is currently under treatment for a segment elevation myocardial infarction, often referred to as STEMI. According to medical experts, STEMI is a particularly severe and perilous type of heart attack, primarily affecting the heart’s lower chambers.
Di Meola boasts an illustrious career spanning several decades, marked by critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award. Among his repertoire, the track “Mediterranean Sundance,” featured on his 1977 album Elegant Gypsy, stands out as one of his most beloved compositions. His official website proudly notes his global impact, having sold over 6 million records worldwide.
Yesterday, in a Facebook post on Thursday, Di Meola offered his fans and friends an update about his health and shared he is postponing live performances until 2024.
“I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the incredible outpouring of love and support that I’ve received during the last 24 hours,” he wrote. “Unfortunately, I’m facing a medical situation that requires some time off from performing and touring. I want to assure you that I’m receiving the best care possible, and I’m fully committed to making a complete recovery.”
He added, “I’m planning to return in 2024, and I’m already looking forward to making music together once again. Your unwavering support means the world to me, and it’s a driving force in my journey towards recovery.”
Today, Di Meola’s wife shared a loving message thanking everyone for their support. She wrote, “Hi, it’s Stephanie, Al’s wife. I just want to thank everybody for the outpouring of love and support! He is doing so much better today, and we will give you an update on his progress!”
