Saxman Sam Kininger (Soulive, Lettuce) and his quartet welcomed special guests to the stage during his birthday show Saturday at Tobacco Road in New York City. Sparks added guitar to a version of Freddie Hubbards Red Clay. Later, tenor saxophonist Henley Douglas Jr. and trumpeter Garret Savluk of the Boston Horns emerged for some extended improvisation. Another Sparks/Horns collaboration is planned for this Thursday at Harpers Ferry in Allston, MA as the group celebrates the release of its new CD, East Coast Funk, on which Sparks plays. The album also features drummer Russ Lawton (Trey Anastasio, Gordon Stone) and percussionist Yahuba.
