The Allman Brothers Band invited additional celebrated guest musicians to join in the action over the weekend at New York Citys Beacon Theatre. Susan Tedeschi Trucks appeared on Friday night, a show that also was marked by a version of Mountain Jam which opened the first set and then closed out the second. Tedeschi appeared on guitar and vocals for Feel So Bad’ and Little By Little which opened set two, after first taking the stage at the end of set one, singing background vocals to Oteil Burbridges leads on Anyday.
The Saturday evening show maintained the family connection, as Gregg Allmans son Devon contributed to Midnight Rider. A bit later, two noted guitarists leapt into the fray, as Lynyrd Skynyrds Gary Rossington appeared on Simple Man and Peter Frampton took the stage for Born Under A Bad Sign’ and Southbound. Still, for many, the highlight was the appearance of octogenarian drummer Roy Haynes (he turns 82 today) on Afro Blue (a song he performed with John Coltrane on multiple occasions) along with Living Colour drummer Will Calhoun and saxophonist Jay Collins (Gregg Allman and Friends). The Brothers return to the Beacon this evening.
