If the Jammys is remembered for its unique artist pairings, then the inaugural Green Apple Music and Arts Festival may one day be known of its intriguing double bills. Throughout the multi-day festival, a number of well known artists will pair off in rooms throughout New York including Toots and the Maytals and Soulive at the Nokia Theater, the Assembly of Dust and Martin Sexton at the Cutting Room, Baaba Maal and Antibalas at Southpaw, Dan Bern and Kaki King at Carnegie Hall and the Mutaytor and Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux at BB King Blues Club. On Sunday, two of the northeast’s original jambands, the Zen Tricksters and Max Creek will also share a bill aboard Rocks Off’s traveling boat cruise. Over the years, the Zen Tricksters and Max Creek have shared a number of bills, most recently at the Wormtown Music Fest last September. While the earliest known bill featuring both of the Dead-inspired bands took place circa-1993 at Southampton, Long Island, NY’s the Surf Club, Max Creek and the Zen Tricksters’ friendship dates back over 25 years. In 1981 the Tricksters, who were called the Volunteers at the time, performed a gig in New Haven, CT’s Great American Music Hall. That night, Max Creek, who was already firmly established in Connecticut, came down to meet the Tricksters, planting the seeds for years of musical collaborations.
