Last night at Tonic marked the debut of Guttman. Marco Benevento and Mike Gordon performed the music of Benny Goodman with Benevento on grand piano and Gordon on bass. During the set, Benevento’s longtime friend and collaborator Brad Barr appeared, fresh from his own showcase show with the Slip at CMJ. Barr was invited to the stage where the guitarist sat behind the drum kit (a spot reserved for his brother Andrew in the Slip) to join in for Goodmans signature song, a cover of Louis Primas Sing, Sing, Sing. Next Wednesday Marco Benevento will continue his November residency at Tonic with assistance from Steven Bernstein (Trumpet), Dave Dreiwitz (Upright Bass) and Claude Coleman (Drums).
